AWARENESS PROGRAM ON CIVIL SERVICES EXAM PREPARATION
An Awareness Programme on
Civil Services was organized at the Commerce Seminar Hall with the objective of
creating awareness among students about the Civil Services Examination, its
pattern, preparation strategy and the qualities required to succeed in the
examination. The programme was organized by Sri V. M. Ravi Shankar, Executive
Engineer, APSPDCL, Anantapur. Nearly 100 Civil Services aspirants attended the
programme with considerable enthusiasm.
I attended the programme
with particular interest and enthusiasm because of my long-standing affinity
towards the Civil Services, which had once been an unaccomplished aspiration of
mine. This personal connection made the programme especially meaningful and
provided an opportunity to reflect upon the aspirations, challenges and
possibilities associated with Civil Services preparation.
When I reached the venue,
Dr. Nagabushanam, Dr. Sugappa, Dr. Jayalakshmi and Sri S. E. Ahamad were
actively engaged in making arrangements for the successful conduct of the
programme. Their efforts contributed significantly to creating an appropriate
academic environment for the interaction.
The resource person for
the programme was Sri Suyash Kumar, IAS, Assistant Collector, who brought
valuable insights from his own academic and professional journey. He had
completed his Chemical Engineering from IIT (BHU) and shared several practical
suggestions with the students based on his experience of preparing for and
appearing in the Civil Services Examination.
Following the
introductory remarks by faculty members and students, Sri Suyash Kumar, IAS,
delivered an insightful presentation on the road map to accomplishing the Civil
Services Examination.
Major Points Highlighted
by the Resource Person
The resource person
emphasized that Civil Services preparation generally requires at least one year
of serious and systematic preparation. However, the duration alone does not
determine success; the quality, consistency and efficiency of preparation are
equally important.
One of his most important
messages was the need to develop the ability to think independently. He advised
students to move beyond rote learning and develop analytical, logical and
multidimensional thinking. According to him, the nature of questions in the
Civil Services Examination increasingly demands the ability to understand an
issue, analyse it from different perspectives and arrive at a reasoned
conclusion rather than merely reproduce memorized information.
He explained the three
stages of the Civil Services Examination—Preliminary Examination, Main
Examination and Personality Test/Interview. Each stage requires a different
approach and demands progressive development of knowledge, analytical ability
and communication skills.
Preliminary Examination
The resource person
explained that the Preliminary Examination broadly consists of General Studies
and CSAT. Questions may cover both the static portions of the syllabus and
contemporary issues. He stressed the importance of understanding the syllabus
thoroughly and analysing Previous Year Questions (PYQs). Such analysis helps
aspirants understand the pattern of questions, identify important areas and
gain confidence in their preparation.
He also advised students
to develop the ability to make an educated guess where appropriate rather than
approaching every question with unnecessary hesitation.
Main Examination
The Main Examination
requires deeper understanding and analytical writing. The resource person
explained the major components, including:
- Two qualifying language papers
- One Essay paper
- General Studies Papers I, II, III and
IV
- One Optional subject consisting of
two papers
He particularly
emphasized that the Essay paper does not depend upon a single prescribed book.
Instead, it requires brainstorming, conceptual clarity and the ability to
connect issues with relevant examples from society and contemporary life.
He also pointed out that
some questions cannot be answered merely through memorization. Questions
involving issues such as the rights of an unborn child, for example, require
the candidate to think critically, examine different dimensions and formulate a
balanced response.
Importance of Thinking
Over Rote Learning
A recurring theme
throughout the interaction was the importance of thinking ability. The resource
person encouraged students to come out of conventional rote-learning methods
and cultivate curiosity, reasoning and analytical thinking.
He observed that the
questions themselves are often designed to compel candidates to think.
Therefore, preparation should not be limited to collecting facts; students
should learn how to interpret, compare, evaluate and apply knowledge.
For Modern Indian History,
he referred to standard sources such as the Spectrum series and the works of Bipan
Chandra, while also emphasizing that aspirants should develop their own study
pattern according to the syllabus and their individual learning requirements.
Preparation Strategy and
Consistency
Sri Suyash Kumar advised
aspirants to follow a structured approach to preparation, while also
recognizing the importance of unstructured learning through observation,
reading and reflection. The study plan should be decided by the aspirant based
on the syllabus, strengths, weaknesses and available time.
He emphasized consistency
as one of the most important factors in Civil Services preparation. At the same
time, he gave a reassuring message to students who may occasionally fail to
maintain their study schedule. Referring to a principle from thermodynamics, he
remarked that no machine is 100% efficient, and aspirants cannot be expected to
be perfectly efficient every day either. If consistency is interrupted, it
should be compensated for through improved efficiency rather than through
guilt.
He advised students not
to carry the guilt of lost study time, as guilt reduces productivity and can
negatively affect subsequent preparation. Instead, aspirants should assess what
went wrong, make necessary adjustments and resume their preparation with
renewed focus.
Overcoming Distractions
and Developing Personality
The resource person
advised students to consciously overcome distractions and remain focused on
their goal. He also highlighted the importance of extracurricular activities in
developing confidence and helping students overcome stage fear.
Drawing from his own
experience of the Civil Services interview, he explained that the Personality
Test is not merely another examination of factual knowledge. There is no
narrowly defined syllabus for the interview. Candidates are expected to
demonstrate awareness, balance, confidence, honesty, clarity of thought and the
ability to respond appropriately.
He cautioned aspirants to
be particularly careful while answering questions in the interview. Making an
incorrect statement with undue confidence can have a serious negative impact.
Therefore, candidates should be honest and thoughtful rather than attempting to
project knowledge that they do not possess.
Interaction with Students
The presentation was
followed by an engaging question-and-answer session lasting nearly half an hour.
Students actively interacted with the resource person and sought clarification
on various aspects of Civil Services preparation, examination strategy and the
challenges faced by aspirants.
The interaction was
particularly useful because it transformed the programme from a conventional
awareness lecture into a practical mentoring session. The students had the
opportunity to understand the examination from the perspective of an officer
who had personally gone through the process.
Felicitation and
Conclusion
At the conclusion of the
programme, Sri Suyash Kumar, IAS, Assistant Collector, was felicitated in
recognition of his valuable contribution to the programme. A group photograph
with the students was subsequently taken as a memorable conclusion to the
event.
The programme was also
graced by Sri P. Soma Sekhar and Sri M. V. L. Narasimham, faculty members of
Hindi, and Dr. Gopal Naik, Lecturer in Political Science.
Overall Impression
The programme was highly
informative, motivating and productive. I was particularly impressed by the
clarity, practicality and depth of the content delivered by the resource
person. Rather than presenting Civil Services preparation as an exercise in
memorization, Sri Suyash Kumar, IAS, highlighted the importance of thinking,
analytical ability, consistency, self-discipline, current awareness, confidence
and perseverance.
His message that nothing
should be considered a barrier to entering the Civil Services and that any
sincere aspirant can succeed with appropriate preparation was particularly
encouraging for the students. His emphasis on analysing PYQs, understanding the
syllabus, developing independent thinking and avoiding unnecessary guilt
provided practical guidance that students can immediately incorporate into
their preparation.
For me personally, the
programme was more than an awareness session. It was an intellectually
stimulating experience that brought back memories of an earlier Civil Services
aspiration and offered an opportunity to appreciate the examination from a
contemporary perspective. I felt genuinely overwhelmed by the quality of the
interaction and the valuable insights shared by the resource person.
I express my sincere

facilitating and hosting such a meaningful programme for students. I also place
on record my appreciation to Sri V. M. Ravi Shankar, Executive Engineer,
APSPDCL, Anantapur, for taking the initiative to organize the programme and to Sri
Suyash Kumar, IAS, for sharing his valuable experiences and guidance with the
student aspirants.
The programme undoubtedly
served as a source of motivation, direction and confidence for aspiring Civil
Services candidates and contributed meaningfully to creating awareness about
one of the most challenging and prestigious competitive examinations in the
country.
